Information about: Blanes

Blanes is the first village in the Costa Brava and is also known as the Door to the Costa Brava. It is one of the most popular tourist resorts of the area. It belongs to the province of Gerona within the community of Cataluña. Among others, the botanic gardens Marimurtra and Pinya de Rosa are worth a visit. For a panoramic view of the city, the Catillo de San Juan is the place to go.

Marimurtra Gardens

The Marimurtra measures 16kms. and is considered done of the best gardens in the Mediterranean. It is located in a mountain and is divided into three zones: subtropical, template and Mediterranean where one can see over 3,000 exotic species. The views are spectacular. It was founded more than eighty years ago by a German gentleman named Carl Faust.

Pinya de Rosa Botanic Gardens

The Botanic Gardens of Pinya de Rosa is a natural area considered to be of natural interest since 2003. It’s creation began in 1945 when Dr. Ferran Riviere de Caralt bought the land and decided to plant original species. The gardens have the largest open air cacti exposition in the whole of Europe.

San Joan Castle

The Castle of San Joan, also known as the Forcadell Castle was built in the middle of the XII Century by Grau de Cabrera. It is located at the top of the Sant Joan mountain and it is raised at 173 metres above sea level making it a most magnificent viewing point. There is a watch tower that was built in the mid XVI century so as to be able to see any enemies and pirates that may be nearing the coast. The tower has been used for various things over time. Before being reformed in 1958 it was used as a telegraph station during part of the XIX century and between 1936 and 1939 it was used as a refuge during the Spanish Civil War.
